Melungeon Heritage Project

Franklin County, Tennessee, Melungeon Heritage Project

Melungeon Heritage is a mixture of tri-racial ancestry that began in Colonial Virginia. Melungeons are of African, European, and Native American origin. They were Indentured servants who worked together, lived together, and intermarried. They are listed as Free People of Color (FPOC) in census records. Ultimately, those family lines migrated into other states, including Tennessee. In the Franklin County, TN. Melungeon Heritage Project, we will explore those (FPOC) family lines and try to connect them back to their original Virginia 1619 Ancestors.
